Hey, there all you ghouls and gals! It's almost the spookiest time of all, Halloween! Real-life horrors may have put a damper on most of our traditional Halloween festivities, but never fear! I, Beth, resident wannabe mistress of darkness, here at The Geekeasy is here to bring you some great recommendations to keep the season dark and menacing.
Scary Movies
I love Horror movies. Personally, I like to keep it creepy year-round. Horror movies are a great way to set the mood. So to meet my spine-chilling needs I count on Shudder. If you haven't heard about Shudder yet it's basically Netflix for horror. They have everything from classics to originals and even a few podcast series available. Truly, this is not a sponsored post, I just really love Shudder. Sounding like a commercial aside, here are some of my personal favorites.
Host
Host, is my favorite horror movie of 2020. It is a 57-minute Shudder Original that gives you the nostalgic feelings of staying up late reading creepypastas, and watching jump scare videos on the internet with your friends at a slumber party. Host is a movie about a reality that we have all been facing this year. Friends, trying to stay connected during quartine. They decide to take their virtual wine night to the next level by having a seance over Zoom, and well, things don't go exactly as planned. The real crazy catch about this movie is that it was filmed entirely on Zoom during quarantine. Since, it was filmed entirely on Zoom and mostly by the actors the cinematography is a little shaky. Though I would venture to say that this just adds to the charm and realistic nature of this movie (think Blair Witch Project). Even though I am a person who spends a lot of time on Zoom these days, I really enjoyed this approach to film making. This is a unique idea that makes for a truly terrifying experience. If you're feeling super brave this Halloween, I dare you to set up a virtual watch party with your friends and check this one out just on your computer screen for a more immersive experience.
Halloween
You can't get more Halloweeny than the classic 1978 slasher Halloween. This is the movie that brings us the psycho slasher in a jumpsuit Michael Myers. He fixates on a young Jamie Lee Curtis who plays a teenage babysitter named Laurie as his next victim. Halloween is my personal favorite of the classic slasher films. This film has all the classic horror tropes, and it takes place on Halloween!! Even if you have seen this one, I highly recommend kicking off your Halloween horror movie night with this one.
BOOze!!
Here at The Geekeasy you know we are all about the BOOs (get it?) Honestly, no celebration is complete without drinks! Here are some of the things we will be sipping on.
The Spooky Dude
This is basically a white russian with a pumpkin twist.
Fill a shaker with ice, 2 shots of vodka, 1.5 shots coffee liquer or 2 shots of black coffee, and top it off with a generous splash of pumpkin spice creamer. Shake it all up and pour into a glass with a couple of ice cubes. If you are feeling fancy top it off with a little whipped cream and nutmeg.
Witches Brew
So actually... This is just mulled wine. But, I make it in my big soup pot that kinda looks like a cauldron so it makes me feel extra witchy! Mulled wine is super easy to make, it tastes great and makes your whole house smell amazing.
Here's what you need
2 bottles of cheap Sangria
Cup of sugar
2 Oranges sliced
Cloves
Cinamon
Nutmeg
Star annis
(You can buy prepackaged mulling spices but it is basically a blend of the spices listed above)
Just dump everything into a pot and have it simmer for at least 3-4 hours.
Most Impotantly.... Costumes!!!
I know you really came here to see pumpkin Zephie
Who cares if you aren't going out anywhere. Throw on your spookiest/comfiest/most fun costume and look awesome just around your house go outside for a walk in your costume. Have a little contest among those in your circle. Who has the best thrown together costumes. It's Halloween! Rock it!
